Breast Reduction

Breast reduction is a type of plastic surgery that is designed to reduce the size and volume of the breasts. The procedure involves the removal of excess breast tissue, fat, and skin, and may also involve repositioning of the nipple and areola.

Breast reduction surgery is typically performed for medical reasons, rather than cosmetic reasons. Women with large breasts may experience a range of physical symptoms, including back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, and skin irritation. In some cases, the weight of the breasts can also cause postural problems and affect a woman’s ability to engage in physical activities.

During a breast reduction surgery, the surgeon will make an incision around the nipple and areola and down to the base of the breast. The excess tissue, fat, and skin will be removed, and the nipple and areola may be repositioned to a higher location on the breast. The incisions will then be closed with sutures.

Breast reduction surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia, and patients will need to rest and avoid strenuous activities for several weeks after the procedure. Complications from breast reduction surgery are rare, but can include bleeding, infection, scarring, and changes in nipple or breast sensation.

Women who are considering breast reduction surgery should consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon to discuss their options and determine whether the procedure is right for them.
